Ok,
Exterior vinyl shutters make a huge difference to the look and feel of a home exterior. Getting the right size vinyl shutters is key. Often, when I drive down the street I see shutters that are not the correct size. Like art, architectural elements need to be the correct size to look appropriate on a home. You don’t want the shutters longer than the window (in height), and you do not want the exterior shutters wider than half of the overall window’s width.
So, what is the “rule-of-thumb”?
1) for decorative vinyl shutters you want to keep to under half of the width of the overall window width. This gives the illusion that the vinyl shutters will be able to close and cover the outside window width.
2) you do not want the vinyl shutters to have a vertical height longer than the window, plus the window casing. So, you have some wiggle room. From the glass portion of the window to the top of the window casing.
3) if you have an extra wide window, then go with an exterior vinyl shutter width as close to 1/3 or 1/4 of the overall width.
